Responsibilities:

  • Provide advice and guidance to the company on employment, labor and benefits law issues, while ensuring consistency with McKesson’s strategic and business objectives. Work closely with human resources to align and support HR’s efforts to create and maintain an engaged workforce
  • Collaborate with business unit leaders and business unit human resource professionals to ensure appreciation of employment law risks arising in their work groups and take preventative action to head off potential problems
  • Responsible for the management and oversight of outside counsel in the defense of employment litigation, in partnership with the litigation attorneys
  • From time to time represent the company as advocate in administrative agency proceedings
  • Carry out other duties as may be requested by the Managing Chief Counsel, Employment and Benefits Law
  • Assist with enterprise-wide projects that reduce employment law risk for the organization

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • 10+ years of progressively more responsible experience in U.S. employment and labor law. Prior in house counsel experience preferred
  • Deep and broad knowledge of U.S. employment and labor laws
  • Effective manager of outside counsel in litigation and advice work
  • A proven track record of successfully building and maintaining strong working relationships with human resources professionals.  The individual’s style must be highly collaborative and team oriented, while still being able to achieve desired objectives and effect change
  • Ability to weigh and balance legal risk with business needs and goals
  • Respected as a professional who drives near-term results but maintains a clear view of the long-term and the need for productive ongoing relationships with the workforce
  • Excellent communication skills – both oral and written

Critical Skills

  • Legal Experience: A subject matter expert who has demonstrated outstanding legal ability in the practice of employment law in-house at a large public or private company. Law firm experience would be a plus. The successful candidate must have a proven track record of accomplishment as a lawyer with strong technical legal expertise and who, when required, can also roll up his or her sleeves and focus on the details of a matter as an individual contributor.  Ability to think analytically and creatively and to problem solve, with a focus on current, innovative, and proactive approaches to employment law.  Anticipates future trends and consequences; has broad and deep legal knowledge and perspective.
