Job Description:

      • Manages laboratory resources to assure the quality, integrity, continuity, and proper dispersion of analytical data generated by the laboratory personnel.
      • Sets strategic direction for refinery product quality conformance and lab capability.
      • Acts as liaison between the lab and other departments.
      • Serves as a technical resource for operational issues including problem solving, engineering studies, and unit surveys.
      • Implements and/or initiates non-routine lab studies relating to plant operation.
      • Evaluates and communicates lab results to other plant departments.
      • Ensures reliable and efficient laboratory operations.
      • Coordinates equipment support at laboratories.
      • Manages those individuals responsible for lab operation.
      • Implements and manages test schedules.
      • Negotiates with 3rd party vendors.
      • Interfaces with government inspectors, and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements for final products and environmental testing.
      • Conducts final review of all process and certification data.
      • Demonstrates proficiency with laboratory software and instrumentation.
      • Serves as administrator for the laboratory information system and data acquisition software.
      • Prepares and stewards laboratory yearly capital and expense budgets.
      • Reviews and supervises laboratory safety training.
      • Oversees routine and non-routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
      • Reviews and evaluates job performance of all lab personnel.
      • Follows and enforces all safety rules and guidelines as established by the Refinery.
      • Ensures overall safe operation of the laboratory, which includes the laboratory safety and chemical hygiene program.
      • Achieves high-levels of productivity and safety under continuous level of stress.
      • Allocates and balances lab resources.
      • Responsible for oversight, coordination, and implementation of facility’s compliance with US EPA and state Clean Fuels regulations
      • Serves as the site-specific SME on corporate guidance documents and site-specific procedures for tasks to comply with final product batch sampling, sample handling, testing and quality assurance programs required by EPA regulations.
      • Serve as a team member to address potential Clean Fuels compliance issues and collaborate across multiple departments/systems as needed.
      • Participates in EPA Annual Attestations and other audits/compliance assessments and oversee the implementation/amendment of procedures/checklists to alleviate potential non-compliance issues.
      • Participate in periodic meetings and teleconferences of the Valero Fuels Compliance Leaders’ Network

      This position is salaried exempt status, which means you are not eligible for overtime pay.

       

      Qualifications

       

      • Bachelor’s or higher level degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related science required.
      • 10 years of laboratory testing experience, including hands-on experience with instrumentation, test material, wet test methods, and ASTM testing processes required.
      • Master’s degree in Chemistry preferred.
      • 5 years of experience managing Quality Assurance/Quality Control processes and procedures in a refinery, chemical, or manufacturing laboratory preferred.
      • Supervisory experience preferred
